THE HISTORY OF DUVEMÅLA

Duvemåla is located just north of Emmaboda. It was here that Vilhelm Moberg’s grandmother was born in 1833. This place inspired Moberg to create the character Kristina in his The Emigrants(Utvandrarna) novels, borrowing many traits from his grandmother.

The last residents of the Rundqvist farm were four siblings: Hertha, Naemi, Martin, and Mauritz. All four remained unmarried and lived together in an old-fashioned way. They were extremely frugal and lived without electricity, telephone, running water, or sewage. They rarely bought anything. When the last of the siblings passed away in 1989, the truth about their wealth was revealed. The siblings had saved one million kronor in cash on the farm. With no will and no heirs, the entire estate was transferred to the General Inheritance Fund. The farm was valued at 5 million kronor. In 1992, Emmaboda Municipality succeeded in acquiring Rundqvistagården.

A visit to Rundqvistagården takes you back to a time when self-sufficiency was a natural part of everyday life.
